FEMA looks at characteristics like rainfall, rebuilding costs, coastal erosion and the home’s distance to a water source. The 12% average rate increase is the maximum allowed by law for multi-peril policies, such as HO-3 home insurance, which is the most common type of policy. But increases can be higher if they’re connected to inflation in the labor and building materials markets. The legislation still needs to get approval from the House and Senate and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature.

For example, dwellings with a replacement cost of $700,000 or higher and single condo units with combined dwellings and replacement cost of $700,000 or higher are ineligible for a policy. Homeowners in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties have a maximum replacement cost limit of less than $1 million through Citizens. The move also prevents insurance companies from dropping customers whose properties were damaged by the Category 4 hurricane. That provision doesn’t allow cancellations or non-renewals for at least 90 days after the properties are repaired. Florida law caps individual Citizens rate increases to 12%, but premiums can be higher because of inflation in the labor and building materials markets.

Even subtle elements like the horizontal and vertical lines and contrasting colors of the pulls on a cabinet system’s doors and drawers add some variety to the room’s look. We’ve already shown how contrasting minimalist colors can add visual interest. Using textures, lines, and subtle accents are other ways to create more visual appeal. Cabinets keep stored items hidden to preserve the garage’s tidy look. This minimalist design is the Midnight theme from Garage Living’s Designer Series.

Showcasing Style

Just because it’s a garage doesn’t mean it can’t have modern amenities. Think of state-of-the-art kitchenettes, sleek bathrooms, and advanced home automation systems. The black cabinets contrast nicely with the lighter neutral colors on the floor, walls, and ceiling. One could jokingly argue that a minimalist design aesthetic has been the default look in garages since they were invented a century ago. Overcrowded open shelving will create visual clutter that conflicts with a minimalist aesthetic. Make use of a closed storage system like garage cabinets to preserve the clean presentation of the space by keeping some things hidden.

The architecture and décor of the spaces we live and shop in also employ minimalistic design elements. Making over your garage could be as simple as updating your organization systems and allowing for more room for your vehicles or DIY workspace. It could involve a full renovation to transform it into a brand-new space. If your home needs a dedicated guest room or home gym, that might be the right decision. Let this door be the emblem of your innovative spirit, a statement piece that showcases both your penchant for style and your understanding of efficiency.

With an elevated bedroom or living area, you can effectively separate the living quarters from the garage while maintaining an open feel. Find out why a minimalist garage philosophy and design style could be perfect for your home, especially if the rest of your house features minimalist design elements. Jake has led some of the most complex projects in the firm and enjoys teaching others, and shepherding projects through implementation. He continues to evaluate, test and incorporate new design software tools, develop a standardized, well-integrated process and train staff across eight studios. Working in our Denver studio, he offers a thoughtful, individualized approach to every project, seeking to understand the larger systems that influence the design and details that create successful, lasting places. Over his career, Micah has accumulated a body of work that includes streetscapes, urban design and mobility studies, open space design, and community master plans. Through passion, discipline, and humility, Mike has earned him the respect and long-term collaboration with many of the nation’s most progressive architectural design voices. In turn, his enthusiasm has duly influenced his design partners and clients to become stewards of their own landscapes and those they encounter in their communities.

His design approach is further characterized by sensitivity to the relationship between architecture and landscape. As a Project Manager in our Aspen studio, Dan’s passion for landscape architecture and planning stems from his influential life experiences in major cityscapes and the outdoors. Whether it is through analysis, drawing or detailing, Dan sees the beauty in all phases of a project. With work experience spanning from Long Island, New York to Southern California, Dan has developed a diverse portfolio and knowledge of different landscapes. He thrives within a team culture and mindset that allows him to take considerable pride in the collaborative effort it takes to make any project great. Heading our environmental graphic design (EGD) team and based out of the Denver office, Renée has led experiential, placemaking, interpretive, exhibition, branding, and wayfinding designs that connect people to place for over 20 years.

The rest of them give you a chance to go out, stretch your legs, revisit the design scene, and explore how others in your communities have fared. With that in mind, and also knowing how the last two years have made even the most introverts among us crave social connection, here is a list of 24 design events to attend throughout the year. The Brown Design Workshop is an interdisciplinary space for construction and design at Brown University. We are a largely student-run shop with direction and supervision from Ian Gonsher and Chris Bull in the School of Engineering. The BDW is an open, flexible workspace that provides easy access to space and tools for anyone affiliated with Brown or RISD to collaborate and prototype. In the coming days, Bull will start work on a new project, which grew out of a collaborative working group that includes Rhode Island Hospital, Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School and the School of Engineering.

His work in both small-scale residential garden design and large-scale resort redevelopment, planning and design has garnered many awards and commendations. Richard is a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a past board member of both the Landscape Architecture Foundation and the American Institute of Certified Planners. He is a registered landscape architect in Arizona, Nevada and Wyoming and a LEED®-certified designer. In 2009 he was the recipient of the American Society of Landscape Architects Design Medal, and in 2012 the American Horticultural Society (AHS) presented him with its Landscape Design Award at the Great American Gardeners Awards Ceremony. He believes that our community’s health and happiness are greatly strengthened by spending time in the natural world. Through research, analysis, iteration, and innovation, he strives to formulate a creative design response to parallel the inherent beauty of nature in urban environments.

With each project Ashley brings a passion for preservation and a high level of craftsmanship to each distinct site; interacting between culture and the land and creating lasting impressions that benefit the good of the public and environment. Ashley holds a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Pennsylvania State University, and a Masters of Urban and Environmental Planning with a Preservation Planning Concentration from the University of Virginia. Located within the School of Engineering, the Brown Design Workshop (BDW) is a makerspace where students not only push the boundaries of what they can dream up, but what they can create. The nearly 10,000 square-foot space boasts a diverse array of tools and machines, including woodworking tools, laser cutters, sewing machines, soldering irons, 3D printers, and more.

The organizers have yet to release a full agenda but if it’s anything like previous years, expect a lot of stimulating and insightful conversation about design and what it can do for users in the years ahead. After a hiatus of two years, the folks behind the Crop are sure excited to be back. Featuring a stellar list of speakers from fields as diverse as visual arts, hustle coaches, illustrators and educators, and muralists and entrepreneurs, the event promises to be a success. During their junior year, Hana Butler Gutierrez ’24 and Hi’ilei Dikilato ’24, mechanical engineering concentrators and co-founders of Women Build at Brown, pondered their experiences in the Brown Design Workshop. Both recalled their wavering confidence as women studying in a male-dominated field. In the University’s makerspace, 3D printers and other rapid prototyping equipment are being used to make personal protective equipment and other components that address the specific needs of local health providers.

For the art collection, Soho House Austin sourced solely Texas artists with an emphasis on those based in Austin, ranging from emerging painters to museum-level talent such as Deborah Roberts. A mural by Desireé Vaniecia adds to the downtown skyline views from the rooftop pool, lined with cabanas and striped lounge chairs. The Ned, which originated in London’s former Midland Bank headquarters, gets its name from the building’s 1920s-era designer Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens. The space includes a private members’ club, Ned’s Club, and a private events floor, alongside 10 restaurants and 250 bedrooms. Up in NYC, the Ned is nestled in the 167-room NoMad hotel and features dining establishments the public can also enjoy. That includes Cecconi’s — a modern Italian restaurant serving pastas, pizza, and seafood — and Little Ned, a Prohibition-era cocktail bar with small plates and views of the Empire State Building.

Fun things to do in NYC this weekend, including the Big Apple’s newest bar openings.

The Dining Room, filled with stained-glass fixtures, handsome wooden accents, and “sun-drenched dining settings,” is meant to evoke the Kennedy years.

Soho House Austin: Membership has its privileges.

Members can dine and drink while soaking up 12th-story views of President’s Park, the 82-acre landscaped grounds that call the White House and the U.S. Menu details are slim for now, other than the fact Ned’s plans to use local and global ingredients in its drinks and food. Bobby Berk’s Austin GuideSince Queer Eye is currently filming in Austin, design expert Bobby Berk shared his guide to the city. He loves downtown cocktail bar the Roosevelt Room, South Congress all-day hotel cafe Cafe No Se, fast-casual Mexican restaurant Fresa’s, Rainey Street bar the Container Bar, and Tex-Mex restaurant El Arroyo.

Soho House Austin Restaurant UpdateMembers-only club and hotel Soho House is aiming to open that first Texas location on South Congress in late May, but with a major change. The private social club within the Music Lane development isn’t going to feature the originally announced public restaurant. Instead, that restaurant space is home to the Austin location of Chicago Mediterranean restaurant Aba, which opened last fall. “We’re not just providing physical spaces but an environment that reimagines networking, entertainment, dining and events in an iconic building and location that only D.C. Could offer,” says group managing director Gareth Banner, in a statement. And with the launch of the social clubs’ design studio, Soho Home, their enviable interiors could actually be yours.
