Isa holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from Cornell University, as well as a Bachelor of Science in ecology and a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese, both from the University of Delaware. An Urban Designer and certified Planner in our Aspen office, Marianne has a passion for cities, streetscape projects and tactical urbanism. Based in our Austin studio, Claire believes that the most successful projects are those that serve people, communities, and the environment.

It’s a rich collaboration of design thinkers from around the world who are going to share their take on how design shapes economy and society. It will bring together independent designers, established brands, academic speakers, government representatives, and emerging talent on a common platform. It’s an event to learn new skills, make new connections, and be inspired by some of the most prominent names in the industry.

It brings together designers from a wide variety of disciplines – industrial, commercial, digital, and such – to share their ideas, developments, and strategies. High school students from the charter school Blackstone Academy also take their elective classes at the BDW, where they learn to use workshop tools for a community-impact project meant to benefit Blackstone or the public. Brown Design Workshop, located in Barus and Holley, is a student-run maker space open to all Brown and RISD students, as well as Providence residents.

Today, based in our Aspen studio, Aimee leads Design Workshop’s people initiatives across all studios as Director of Human Resources. She is responsible for all HR processes including talent management, compliance, benefits, learning and development, performance management, as well as employee relations and engagement. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Saint Michael’s College and a Master of Strategic Human Resource Management from the University of Denver and belongs to World at Work Society and the Society for Human Resource Management. Outside of work, Aimee enjoys traveling, skiing and running accompanied by her furry office mates, two golden retrievers named Rosie and Oscar. Tracy, operations manager and marketing coordinator for our Tahoe studio, strives to support the firm and coworkers succeed in all aspects of design.

The Brown Design Workshop is a student-run makerspace which aims to make the practices of design and creation more collaborative, open, flexible and accessible. Jennifer holds a Master of Landscape Architecture Degree from Ball State University and a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from China Agricultural University. Patrick is a two-time winner of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Award of Excellence, the most prestigious commendation in the industry. House of Representatives, and for his Contribution to Architecture and the Built Environment by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Ben holds a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University and served as Section Chair and Conference Chair of the American Society of Landscape Architects in Texas. Benjamin has recently lectured at the University of Maryland, is an active member of ULI, past President of ASLA’s Maryland chapter, and holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Florida.
INTRODUCTORY WOOD WORKSHOP (1-1.5 hours)
Courses that are taught in the BDW, Monitors, and BDW Maker Grant Recipients are given designated storage space. As the space continues to evolve and grow, this video captures what to expect in the Brown Design Workshop and highlights this go-to place for “makers” on Brown’s campus. This workshop outlines how to plane timber to create smooth lumber on the planing and joining machinery. Whether you become a member through a class, join us for a specialty workshop or just to learn a new skill, there are plenty of ways to get involved!

Each of these three conferences will be packed full of intense discussions on graphic design, UI/UX design, content, code, and more. You will get a feel of how things are at the moment and what you need in your skillset to ensure you continue your journey as the design world takes its next steps. You will be able to talk with speakers who are breaking barriers in terms of sustainability in branding, development of design systems, the interconnectivity of SEO and UX, immersive design, and so much more. An Event Apart will take place online, in Denver, and then in San Francisco at various times of the year. For events in Denver and San Francisco, plan your travels for October and December, respectively. After you register, you can participate in art-making programs, look at exclusive art exhibitions that may fuel your creativity, and enjoy live Q&As with celebrated artists, designers, and innovators.

Jake has led some of the most complex projects in the firm and enjoys teaching others, and shepherding projects through implementation. He continues to evaluate, test and incorporate new design software tools, develop a standardized, well-integrated process and train staff across eight studios. Working in our Denver studio, he offers a thoughtful, individualized approach to every project, seeking to understand the larger systems that influence the design and details that create successful, lasting places. Over his career, Micah has accumulated a body of work that includes streetscapes, urban design and mobility studies, open space design, and community master plans. Through passion, discipline, and humility, Mike has earned him the respect and long-term collaboration with many of the nation’s most progressive architectural design voices. In turn, his enthusiasm has duly influenced his design partners and clients to become stewards of their own landscapes and those they encounter in their communities.
His design approach is further characterized by sensitivity to the relationship between architecture and landscape. As a Project Manager in our Aspen studio, Dan’s passion for landscape architecture and planning stems from his influential life experiences in major cityscapes and the outdoors. Whether it is through analysis, drawing or detailing, Dan sees the beauty in all phases of a project. With work experience spanning from Long Island, New York to Southern California, Dan has developed a diverse portfolio and knowledge of different landscapes. He thrives within a team culture and mindset that allows him to take considerable pride in the collaborative effort it takes to make any project great. Heading our environmental graphic design (EGD) team and based out of the Denver office, Renée has led experiential, placemaking, interpretive, exhibition, branding, and wayfinding designs that connect people to place for over 20 years.

With that in mind, and also knowing how the last two years have made even the most introverts among us crave social connection, here is a list of 24 design events to attend throughout the year. The Brown Design Workshop is an interdisciplinary space for construction and design at Brown University. We are a largely student-run shop with direction and supervision from Ian Gonsher and Chris Bull in the School of Engineering. The BDW is an open, flexible workspace that provides easy access to space and tools for anyone affiliated with Brown or RISD to collaborate and prototype. In the coming days, Bull will start work on a new project, which grew out of a collaborative working group that includes Rhode Island Hospital, Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School and the School of Engineering.
His work in both small-scale residential garden design and large-scale resort redevelopment, planning and design has garnered many awards and commendations. Richard is a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a past board member of both the Landscape Architecture Foundation and the American Institute of Certified Planners. He is a registered landscape architect in Arizona, Nevada and Wyoming and a LEED®-certified designer. In 2009 he was the recipient of the American Society of Landscape Architects Design Medal, and in 2012 the American Horticultural Society (AHS) presented him with its Landscape Design Award at the Great American Gardeners Awards Ceremony. He believes that our community’s health and happiness are greatly strengthened by spending time in the natural world. Through research, analysis, iteration, and innovation, he strives to formulate a creative design response to parallel the inherent beauty of nature in urban environments.
With each project Ashley brings a passion for preservation and a high level of craftsmanship to each distinct site; interacting between culture and the land and creating lasting impressions that benefit the good of the public and environment. Ashley holds a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Pennsylvania State University, and a Masters of Urban and Environmental Planning with a Preservation Planning Concentration from the University of Virginia. Located within the School of Engineering, the Brown Design Workshop (BDW) is a makerspace where students not only push the boundaries of what they can dream up, but what they can create. The nearly 10,000 square-foot space boasts a diverse array of tools and machines, including woodworking tools, laser cutters, sewing machines, soldering irons, 3D printers, and more.

The organizers have yet to release a full agenda but if it’s anything like previous years, expect a lot of stimulating and insightful conversation about design and what it can do for users in the years ahead. After a hiatus of two years, the folks behind the Crop are sure excited to be back. Featuring a stellar list of speakers from fields as diverse as visual arts, hustle coaches, illustrators and educators, and muralists and entrepreneurs, the event promises to be a success. During their junior year, Hana Butler Gutierrez ’24 and Hi’ilei Dikilato ’24, mechanical engineering concentrators and co-founders of Women Build at Brown, pondered their experiences in the Brown Design Workshop. Both recalled their wavering confidence as women studying in a male-dominated field. In the University’s makerspace, 3D printers and other rapid prototyping equipment are being used to make personal protective equipment and other components that address the specific needs of local health providers.

Based in our Chicago office, Sara graduated from the University of Illinois and earned a Master of Urban Planning degree and Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree. Naturally empathetic and analytical, Sara is a process strategist focused on curating innovative methods for stakeholder engagement to continuously improve the workshop experience and translate this input in a way that best informs the work we do.
